industrial food system

The Industrial Food System is the production is the production of food. Our food is produced on farms. Most of our fruit and vegetables are produced on farms in different states and are sent to supermarkets all around the country. Most of the meats in the U.S also come from the farm. Our meats such as cows, pigs, and chickens. Before our meats
are delivered to the supermarkets all around, our meats go through a whole process of being killed and then cleaned and packaged.

The farmers and the immigrants that help out on the farm grow fruits and vegetables. The immigrants work for minimum wage and for long hours (10-12 hours) a day. When the time is right, the fruits and vegetables are picked and packaged and are sent to the supermarkets. The Industrial Food System is based on machines and people. They are based on machines and people because people and machines are the main parts to getting the food and sending it out. This is also because the machines makes everything easier for people to work with.

The people that are involved in the Industrial Food System are companies that are in the food business and the government. The companies that are in the food business are involved in the Industrial Food System because they provide everyone with food from all over the states and they try to make a profit off of the food they produced. The government is involved in the Industrial Food System as well because the government gives money to farmers to plant and grow food.

Some experiences with food itself was that I didn't know what was in it because I never bothered to read what was on the ingredients/the label. If it was food, it didn't matter much to me as long as it was something to fill my stomach up. Also if it was given to me on a plate and looked good enough to eat, it was considered as food that I could eat and wouldn't have a problem with. Now after food class, I pay closer attention to the ingredients in the food and what I am really eating.

The Industrial Food System is the primary source of the U.S nutrition because they provide us with food. It is also because that is where most of our food comes from, as well as how we get our food. Some problems that the Industrial Food System can inherent are weight problems, cause in deaths, eating disorders and cruelty towards animals (the ones we eat). The Industrial Food System can inherent these problems because the food we eat comes from all over the place. It comes from farms, restaurants, fast food places and supermarkets. Some of these places is one reason for three of the problems that the Industrial Food System can inherent, which are weight problems, eating disorders and cause in deaths. The essence of the Industrial Food System is deaths. The essence is deaths because of the problems that the Industrial Food System can create or lead to which was discussed earlier. The problems that the Industrial Food System can are just like other world deaths just like cardiovascular disease, smoking, and more.

The Industrial Food System matters because many people eat the food that is produced and sold to them. Also the food that is produced and turned into non-healthy people, it can lead to other problems and issues. The Industrial Food System tells us that we do not pay much attention to what we eat. Also that if food is put in front of us and is edible, we will pretty much just eat it. As long as it looks and smells good enough to eat, we will pretty much just eat it and settle with what it is. By knowing what we eat is of importance because the food we eat affects each and every one of us individually.

what's good for people to eat?

The Mediterranean diet is a modern, traditional diet plan for countries surrounding the Mediterranean basin, Greece and Southern Italy. Being introduced in 1945, the Mediterranean diet failed to gain widespread acknowledgment until the 1990’s. Though there are good and bad qualities to a diet, the Mediterranean diet is one of the healthiest diets out there. The Mediterranean diet is good for people to eat because of the many health benefits. There are many reasons why it has been supported or proved that the Mediterranean diet is the way to go. This eating style significantly reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer, chronic diseases and also discourages the clogging of the arteries as well as lowering rates of cardiovascular disease.

It has been proven the Mediterranean diet is healthier than Northern European and American diets due to the fact that the Mediterranean diet consists of an increased consumption of grains, such as spaghetti, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and olive oil. A part of the Mediterranean diet contains healthy fats that can be consumed. Some fat sources are olive oil, canola oil, nuts and fish. These healthy fats contain less cholesterol. These healthy fats also contain a beneficial type of mega-3 fatty acid called linolenic acid.

People on the Mediterranean diet is good for health. This is because the people that are on the Mediterranean diet live a much healthier life than others do. Ingredients for the Mediterranean diet are highly accessible because it is available in supermarkets and stores and is easy to find. The Mediterranean diet is a good ethical choice because of all the health benefits.

Olive oil being the great attraction of this diet has many health benefits. Olive oil is used because it does not have the same cholesterol raising effect as saturated fats do. It is also used because it is a good source of antioxidants. Olive oil helps sustain human metabolism such as body growth and bone growth. Olive oil is also a good way to delay aging. Olive oil maintains skin and muscle suppleness, heals abrasions, and soothes burning or drying effects of sun and water. Olive oils main use us also the vitamin supplements distributed. Vitamins associated with olive oil are vitamin A, B-1, B-2, C, D, E, K and iron. In this diet olive oil is also acknowledged for its laxative use.

Another benefit of the Mediterranean diet is eating fish on a daily basis or a few times a week, which can also be seen as harmful, but eating fish benefits the dieter by supplying omega 3 fatty acids. By eating red meat, it can also improve health.

People who eat the Mediterranean diet, they also drink red wine. By drinking red wine, it reduces the risk of heart disease. Drinking red wine helps reduce the blood’s ability to clot the arteries. Women and men above the age of 65 should not drink more than 5-ounces of red wine. Men under the age of 65 years should not drink more than two 5-ounces of red wine. If the intake of red wine is more, it may increase health problems, which includes certain types of cancer.

Nuts are also a part of the Mediterranean diet. The nuts that are contained in the Mediterranean diet are tree nuts. These tree nuts contain walnuts, pecans, almonds and hazel nuts. These tree nuts are low in saturated fats. Other nuts are high in calories. When eating nuts, they should not be eaten in large amounts.

People on the Mediterranean diet live a much healthier life. This shows the Mediterranean diet gives people a healthier life because it reduces the chances of chronic diseases. It also reduces the chances of certain types of cancer and heart disease. Ingredients for the Mediterranean diet can be accessible at supermarkets and stores all around. People do not need to be going on a scavenger hunt to find the ingredient. The Mediterranean diet is a good ethical choice because it is low in fat. Also because in the ingredients, they contain less cholesterol and less calories.

By looking around the world, parts of the world is over weight. This is due to the fast food restaurants that are rapidly being spread across the country and across the world. It is important to know what is good to eat because if you are just eating anything and not really paying attention to what you are eating, you might be putting yourself in danger.

oil & food: a rising security challenge

As the population is increasing, demands on oil are higher because land productivity is raised. Land productivity is raised by using different ways that require using oil. The demands for oil are high due to the vehicles and machines used on farms. The production of oil or energy is broken down into the following percentages: 28% fertilizer manufacturing, 7% irrigation, 34% farm vehicles. Oil is also used for the following: agricultural production (21%), move (14%), process (16%), package (7%), sell (4%) and store the food (32%) that is produced and sent out from the farm to resturants and supermarkets (7%). The more intensive with energy, the transport of food can help provide fresh foods from other countries. Fresh foods require less work and processed foods does because processed foods has to go through many processes of packaging, which uses more oil. On the other hand, fresh foods require less packaging since they are packaged in a larger amount than processed food is.

peak oil primer

As a country that is highly dependent on oil, it is unable to predict if we will go past our oil peak again in the future. The next peak should be in the year 2035. Looking at the statistics, most of the oil we consume goes mainly to transportation (95% of global energy is used for transportation).

re: fast food. doing something in the real world

since i always knew about fast food and it's not the healthiest thing to eat, soi decided to talk about it with my friends and my family about it. i'm pretty sure everyone already knows that it's not healthy, but i want to go more in depth with it. i wanted to share my knowledge on fast food and food in general with them, with already what i know. when i sat down and talked to them, my family memebers didn't reallyhave much of a reaction to eat. i'm guessing thats because they rarely eat fast food so they wouldn't care as much as those who do. from this experience of telling people about fast food, some care and some don't. it's always the ones that really pay attention to what they buy (food) that don't seem to really care about what they're eating cause they buyt he food and know what's in it. compared to those who just buy anything that seems good to eat to them that don't know whats in their food. but back onto talking about letting others know about fast food. my friends were pretty shocked, but they said they would still continue eating fast food because it's cheap and affordable, they just won't eat it as much as they use to. they'll try to resist from eating fast food and watch what they eat. i didn't tell them the whole story about where the food really comes from and how the whole thing works. i think they would have been too disgusted to still have a appetite later on so i didn't tell them the nasty parts. after telling both my family and friends about food and stuff they should know about it, i felt pretty good and accomplished my mission on spreading my knowledge. i feel good because slowly people will soon know where their food comes from and instead, people wouldn't answer "from the supermarket" like in michael pollan's book, omnivore's dilemma, the next time someone asks them where their food is from.

ling wen's essay:
you state good background information in your essay. i like the background information that you put in your essay. it wasn't ust about food itself, you had inserted information about what causes deaths due to the way people are eating.

visit to supermarket - nutritional/medical & economical

Today, we took a trip to Associated Supermarket. I went to look at the yogurt section and the peanut butter section. I compared two brands for both yogurt and peanut butter. The brands that i compared were La Yogurt vs Yoplait yogurt and Skippy vs Jiffy peanut butter. While I was standing in front of all the yogurt, I chose to compare the brands La Yogurt and Yoplait because they were right next to each other just like Skippy and Jiffy. I first took a look at the yogurt and asked myself many questions. So I first took a look at the La Yogurt brand. When I looked at the nutrition facts for the raspberry flavored yogurt, the percentage for vitamin A was 2%. Then I took another look at another flavor, which was mango. The percentage for vitamin A was 4%. The cost of the product, La Yogurt is only $0.79. The price of Yoplait yogurt is only $0.89. Then I walked over to the peanut butter section and I walked over to the Skippy and jiffy brand. I looked at the different types of peanut butter they had: original, chunky, low fat or creamy. The appearance for both look the same for me, except for the nutrition facts. When I looked at the different types of peanut butter for Skippy brand, all the nutrition facts were all the same, which I found weird because for Jiffy, all the nutrition facts for the other types of peanut butter were different. The cost was also close just like the yogurt. The cost of Skippy is $2.49 and Jiffy is $2.59. The nutrition facts on the Jiffy bottles were closely related to each other, they weren't very different liek the nutrition facts on the La Yogurt.

Questions:
- Is this how much yogurt really costs?
- Is yogurt expensive to make?
-Why would the percentage of the same brand yogurt be different? Shouldn't they be the same percentage?
- If the product is the same, what's the point of the brand/company that makes it?
- Which brand is healthier, La Yogurt or Yoplait?
- Should all yogurt & peanut butter brands have the same nutrition facts?
- If both products were made differently, would it cost more or less?
- Is the better or healthier one a bit more expensive than the other?
- Does Jiffy and Yoplait costs more because it costs more to make it?
- If La Yogurt added more ingredients to it, would it make it more healthy or less healthy?
